Residents Enjoy the Abundant Green Space at Woodleigh Chase

Recent studies confirm the connection between time spent outdoors and improved health in older adults--great news for Woodleigh Chase residents who love meeting up with friends at campus green spaces and outdoor amenities.
Whether dining alfresco at Blue Jay Pub's outdoor terrace, strolling along landscaped walkways, or joining neighbors for a glass of wine around the firepit, the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air in a secure, serene environment is just one benefit of living at the Erickson Senior Living community in Fairfax, Va.
Out and about
Resident Andrea Arntsen knows the outdoor spaces at Woodleigh Chase as well as anyone. An avid walker and gardener, not a day goes by when she isn't out and about getting her steps in or her hands dirty.
"I do a lot of walking. Unless the weather is inclement, I walk every day--usually in the morning and often in the afternoon-- through the garden area and follow the paths throughout the community," she says. "I also love to walk in Lake Royal Park, just a few miles from here. It's beautiful in the fall and spring."
Tending to one of the raised patches in the community garden gives her the opportunity to exercise her green thumb.
"It was very important for me to have an outdoor space where I could garden," says Andrea.
"Many people have grown tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, onions, kale, flowers, bulbs, sunflowers, marigolds--anything they want. I grow kale, lettuce, and bok choy in the winter." She adds, "People often stop by to ask questions when I'm out working in the garden. It's a fantastic way to meet new people."
Amenities abound
Unlike the isolation many older adults experience when living alone in a house, Woodleigh Chase offers plenty of ways to residents to connect and socialize outdoors.
"For an active community like Woodleigh Chase, outdoor spaces significantly contribute to a better quality of life," says Fitness Manager Kathy Duke. "Spending time outdoors can enhance mental well-being, reduce stress and anxiety, improve cognitive function, and increase vitamin D absorption."
In addition to walking paths and a community garden, the 42-acre campus boasts bocce and pickleball courts, a cornhole area, putting green, dog park, firepit, and turf area for yard games.
Outdoor activities
"There are so many opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors without ever leaving campus," says Resident Life Director Renee Budd.
"Our outdoor terrace is a popular spot where people gather for happy hour and roast marshmallows over the fire. We host concerts on the patio, and once a week, our putting green transforms into a location for an outdoor 'boot camp' exercise class."
"There are many more planned social activities, clubs, and activities at Woodleigh Chase than I had in my townhouse development," says Andrea. "Here, you have a community of friends!"
Private green space
Because each residence at Woodleigh Chase has a screened balcony or patio, residents have their own personal outdoor oasis as well. Many residents use these spaces to sip a cup of coffee while watching the birds or unwind with a glass of wine at the end of a busy day.
"I have a western exposure that allows me to enjoy the afternoon sun," says Andrea. "I love spending time where I can read, soak in the fresh air, and tend to my perennials and herbs.
The lush landscaping creates additional opportunities to enjoy nature. "I also appreciate the flowering bushes and trees in front, especially in the fall when the leaves change color."
Feline seal of approval
She adds, "My cat likes lounging on the porch, as well, often perched atop his cat condo."
Best of all, Woodleigh Chase residents enjoy their beautifully landscaped home--and every outdoor amenity--without any homeownership hassles like mowing the grass, mulching the gardens, or power washing the siding and deck. It's all taken care of for you!
