Nestled on 65 scenic acres, Tallgrass Creek, an Erickson Senior Living community in Overland Park, Kans., offers more than just a place to call home. With an abundance of outdoor amenities and activities, it also provides an engaging environment for residents to make the most of their retirement.

From strolling along beautifully landscaped paths to starting a friendly game of bocce with neighbors, there are dozens of ways for residents to connect with nature and one another.

As resident Bob Butterworth says, "Living at Tallgrass Creek isn't the finale, it's the encore. It's an opportunity to do things you never had time for. You're not cleaning gutters and trimming roses. You're out spending time with people, doing things you always wanted to do or learn."

Green spaces

In fact, a growing body of research shows that spending time outdoors results in improved health in older adults. Enhancing their physical, mental, and emotional health is icing on the cake for Tallgrass Creek residents who enjoy the great outdoors.

The community boasts a putting green, bocce court, walking trails, and resident gardens, all of which encourage exercise, socialization, and relaxation.

The gardens are a shining example of the community's vibrancy. What started as a dozen beds has grown every year to meet the increasing demand. Residents plant a variety of flowers and vegetables--and even spruce up the dog park with blooms.

Resident Life Director Shellie Sullivan believes that these spaces contribute significantly to residents' well-being.

"Nature has a way of bringing people together," Sullivan says. "Whether it's sitting by the pond or enjoying the vibrant blooms of our resident gardens, there's something for everyone."

She adds, "Getting sunshine and fresh air is so important. I love seeing everyone smiling, interacting, and simply enjoying themselves. I think that's why our residents live such fulfilling lives."

Social connections

For many residents, these outdoor amenities and activities are more than just a way to stay active--they're a chance to build and strengthen friendships.

Bob, who moved to Tallgrass Creek from Overland Park in 2016, exemplifies the community's spirit of camaraderie. He organizes popular events like the annual putting and cornhole tournaments, which attract hundreds of participants and spectators.

"We don't do it just for the activity," Bob says. "We do it for the camaraderie, to get together and have fun. Whether it's golf, cornhole, or something else, the real goal is connecting with others."

Maria Traynham, who moved to Tallgrass Creek with her husband Jerry in 2020, agrees. She participates in bocce, pickleball, and walks her schnauzer mix around the community's trails.

"Being outdoors feels so freeing," says Maria. "Breathing fresh air, soaking up the sunshine, and meeting people--it just lifts you up."

Maria notes how the thoughtful placement of benches along walking paths creates inviting spots for quiet reflection or conversation. "When we first moved in, we didn't have a balcony or patio, so we'd sit outside with our dog. It's such a peaceful environment," she says.

A place for everyone

From seasonal festivals like the apple fest and the Halloween pet parade to everyday club gatherings, there are also an abundance of events and celebrations happening on the campus' vast green spaces.

"We've created spaces where residents can gather comfortably, whether it's for a barbeque, a tournament, or just to sit and chat," says Sullivan. "We're constantly looking for ways to improve. It's all about asking residents what they want and finding ways to make it happen."

Sense of community

But the joy of living at Tallgrass Creek goes beyond its amenities. For residents like Bob and Maria, it's the sense of belonging that makes all the difference.

Maria reflects, "I really like everything about living here, but the social environment is what stands out. Moving from a large house to an apartment was an adjustment, but the community here makes it all worthwhile. We're always trying to entice others to join in and make connections."

Bob echoes her sentiment. "We pride ourselves on knowing each other. When you live here, you're not just neighbors, you're family," he says.
