Residents of Windsor Run in Matthews, NC enjoy an array of outdoor activities and amenities.

Nestled on 60 acres of enviable green space, Windsor Run, an Erickson Senior Living community in Matthews, N.C., offers residents unbeatable access to dozens of outdoor amenities that encourage activity and connection.

Whether tending to a patch in the community gardens, competing on a bocce team, joining friends for cocktails around the firepit, or strolling along landscaped walkways, the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air in a secure, serene environment is just one of the many benefits of living at the popular community.

"When I lived in my house, I got tired of all the yard work. It got harder to do and was not as much fun," says resident Don Canfield. "Moving to Windsor Run means enjoying beautiful gardens and landscaping, and I don't have to do any of the work."

"My husband Al and I are both very committed to exercising daily. Besides going to the gym and pool, we walk a lot," says Connie Rogers, who appreciates having a nature trail right on campus. "We particularly enjoy the grounds as we go on our daily stroll. Windsor Run is a beautifully landscaped campus, which makes for a lovely vista on our walks."

Maintaining the community's nature trail is the goal of the Trail Friends Group, whose members volunteer to install and care for plants that help pollinators thrive. Working in partnership with the resident Wood Chucks woodworking group, they've also created a bench for relaxing and signs to identify different plants.

The two community gardens are also popular amenities, as the Windsor Run Garden Club is already busy growing a variety of vegetables and flowers--gladly sharing their harvest with neighbors.

New additions

For residents who enjoy friendly competition, the community's two new bocce courts are sure to please.

"The new courts are very nice," says Don. "We've seen lots of residents come out to try. It's a lot of fun. Even for those who've never played before, there are others who welcome the opportunity to teach them."

And last year, a firepit was added to the new Carolina Courtyard, quickly becoming a hub of outdoor activity.

"I just love going to the firepit and working on my needlepoint canvas. It's a great way to meet new people and enjoy time with the people I already know," says Connie.

"The firepit is a great place for outdoor gatherings with friends," agrees Don. "It's like going out to your own backyard. It's a nice way to spend time outside."

This year's additions will include new benches along campus pathways and a second dog park near the community's newest residence buildings.

"As our campus continues to grow, we're sure it will add more opportunities to enjoy the outdoors," says Connie.

Outdoor events

Taking advantage of Windsor Run's bucolic backdrop and amenities, residents and staff members organize a wide variety of outdoor events.

As weather allows, the Windsor Run 4 O'Clock Singers perform and the Fly Swatters Social Happy Hour Group meets on the Woodland Commons patio.

"The Fall Festival is a favorite event on campus," says Resident Services Manager Jillian Perry. "Together, residents and staff members run an array of outdoor games. Winners collect tickets for a prize basket raffle."

She continues, "Our Earth Day Fair, organized by our resident Recycling and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging committees, brings residents and staff members together to learn about the ways our community helps protect the Earth. And our Summer Camp Day is a day of friendly competitions in cornhole, plastic axe throwing, and yard games."

This past winter, Windsor Run's first annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony was held by the firepit.

"More than 300 residents signed up," says Perry. "It's a lovely new tradition and a beautiful symbol of our growing community." This year, a large menorah will also be added to the courtyard for Hanukkah.

Staying active

"All of our outdoor amenities and activities promote a vibrant lifestyle," says Perry. "There is so much research on how spending time outside keeps you healthy--how simply surrounding yourself with greenery can make a difference."

Connie, reflecting on all the activities held outdoors on the gorgeous campus, says, "We are very glad to call Windsor Run our home."
