Residents Enjoy the Abundant Green Space at Siena Lakes

April 9, 2025

Nestled within 25 acres of enviable green space, Siena Lakes, the Erickson Senior Living community in Naples, Fla., offers unbeatable access to dozens of outdoor amenities that encourage activity and connection.

For Linda and Steve Gauly, who moved to the sought-after community with their beloved Goldendoodle Lucy, living at Siena Lakes offers the opportunity for daily walks around campus, bike rides, golfing, bocce, and a variety of outdoor celebrations.

"Even though we lived in a gated community prior to our move, we did not have a reason to be outside. There was nothing to look at," explains Linda. "Here, I can walk right on campus, and it's beautiful. And it's safe. There's always someone to wave to or talk with. Even five minutes of friendly conversation puts you in a better mood. There's such a community feeling here, and it's very comforting."

And this is just icing on the cake for the couple and their Siena Lakes neighbors. Research studies link spending time in green space with improved health in older adults.

"Because our residents' interests are so diverse, we offer a variety of amenities, activities, and events, to suit their lifestyle and preferences," says Matt Verborn, Siena Lakes' resident life director. "We do everything we can to promote their health and well-being."

Staying active

Since their move two years ago, Linda and Steve have enjoyed taking part in many of Siena Lakes' outdoor activities.

"I'm a big fan of exercise," says Linda. "If Lucy's walking, I'm walking, and there's no such thing as a short walk for us. There's a lot around here to see. It's just beautiful!"

She adds, "We live in a park-like setting here. There is a gazebo we can sit under by the lake and benches all around the walking area. It's like you're in a park, but it's your home."

In addition to daily walks, Linda plays bocce on a team called the Rocking Rollers, while Steve bikes several miles around campus a few times a week.

"I also take Lucy to the dog park," says Steve. "And I enjoy golfing on Wednesdays and Saturdays with the golf group. When it comes to exercising for your health, 'You have to use it or lose it.'"

Outdoor experiences

In addition to the activities and amenities, Siena Lakes offers a range of outdoor events, including resident-led nature walks throughout the community and alfresco "theme nights."

Linda and Steve participate in many of these dining experiences, including Italian, Asian Fusion, Mexican, and Prime Rib Nights.

"When the weather is nice, Italian Night is held out on a veranda overlooking the beautiful lake," says Steve.

Special events

The couple also enjoys Siena Lakes' popular Sunset in Paradise, a campus-wide event featuring a hors d'oeuvres served while residents watch the sunset; the annual Siena Lakes Luau and pig roast; and sweet treats offered by the ice cream truck visiting campus several times a year.

Last summer, coinciding with the 2024 Olympic Games, Siena Lakes hosted its own Senior Olympics, providing residents the opportunity for some friendly competition in cornhole, discus throw, bocce, and miniature golf on the outdoor putting green. The event's opening ceremony included a walk around Lake Siena.

Last year, Siena Lakes hosted a Block Party Kickoff Event, for both residents and staff members, complete with food trucks and a bocce tournament.

"We take advantage of the beautiful grounds at Siena Lakes to hold as many events outside as possible," says Verborn. "They're such a great opportunity to meet your neighbors and experience something new."

'Like an oasis!'

In response to resident feedback, Siena Lakes has made a number of popular updates recently, including the addition of a water fountain and new gate at the dog park; enhancing the bocce courts; and adding an alfresco dining space outside Stoney's Restaurant, located near the outdoor pool.

And new outdoor events are continually added to the community calendar, including the new "Movie Under the Stars" evenings.

"I've always lived around a lot of landscape. I was a little concerned Siena Lakes is in the city, but the good news is you'd never know it," says Steve. "The way they have managed the property and included trees, landscaping, the birdhouses--they've done a beautiful job. Outside the community, there's anything you could want--shopping, other restaurants, etc. But here, at Siena Lakes, it's kind of like an oasis!"
