Dedicated to finding the perfect senior living option for them, Steve and Ester Hogye began researching retirement communities near their house in Annandale, Va., well before they were ready to move.

"As we researched a variety of different communities, Greenspring really stood out to us," says Steve of the Erickson Senior Living community in Springfield, Va.

But because they were researching in advance, they were concerned that a floor plan they were excited about might not be available in the future. By joining the Priority List, not only did the Hogyes secure their spot in line for their desired floor plan, but they also gained insider access to the sought-after community.

"We knew the community was popular, so we joined the Priority List," explains Steve. "Being on the Priority List was helpful in so many ways, including invitations to informational seminars and access to the Live the Life suite."

"Joining the Priority List is the best way to get to know our community," says Sales Director Franklin Funes. "You get to experience Greenspring as if you were a current resident. That firsthand experience is unbeatable!"

Spending time wisely

Upon joining the Priority List, the couple received invitations to members-only events, including the Priority List orientation, a "parade" of residences, and an educational series on topics such as finances and health care services available at the community.

"We really enjoyed the orientation," says Steve. "Staff members answered questions on everything from apartment homes to amenities. Additionally, tables were set up with information on various resident activity groups."

He continues, "I was also very impressed with the financial seminar. We received valuable insight on preparing for the future, in terms of our finances."

Living the life

However, the most influential factor in the couple's decision-making process was their Live the Life stay--an overnight experience in a furnished suite that allows Priority List members to sample the amenities, dine at on-campus restaurants, and chat with current residents.

Greenspring has several Live the Life suites with different floor plans, helping prospective residents envision themselves in a home that best aligns with their lifestyle.

During their stay, the Hogyes were given a long list of campus activities and an invitation to participate in anything that interested them. They chose to check out some lectures and a dance class.

"The stay really gave us a sense of the community here," says Steve. "When we walked down the hallways, people said hello and introduced themselves. There were also lots of things to do. We were busy! We could really imagine ourselves living here."

"Our stay was the turning point for us," agrees Ester. "We found everyone to be so welcoming and friendly."

A place to call home

Following their Live the Life stay, the Hogyes scheduled a visit with Sales Counselor Barbara McAlpine to tour available residences.

"That's when we found our home," says Steve of the Hastings, a two-bedroom, one-and-a-half-bath floor plan with a bay window. Although they were originally planning for the future, they fell in love with Greenspring and were ready to make the move.

"We could envision our things in the home. We both had a very positive feeling and said yes, making the [entrance] deposit that very day," recalls Steve.

With their decision made, Steve and Ester further put their Priority List membership to use, enlisting the help of Planning and Moving Consultant Lauren Askey to determine what furniture to bring to their new home and to create a seamless plan.

"Lauren visited us in our house with a copy of the apartment floor plan," says Steve. "She was very helpful, giving us some great suggestions on what we could bring. She was also helpful in recommending preferred moving companies. [The company] did a wonderful job and were easy to work with."

‘Better than we imagined'

Thanks to all the careful preparation, the Hogyes experienced a stress-free move in November 2023 and have been living life to the fullest at Greenspring ever since.

Ester found a passion for pickleball, a game she never played prior to their move. She also spends time swimming, maintaining a garden space, and volunteering at the campus butterfly garden. Steve enjoys biking and attending yoga and line dancing classes with Ester.

"I'm very happy we moved to Greenspring, and joining the Priority List was very helpful," says Ester.

"It gave us a good grasp about what life is like here. And since moving, we've found it's even better than we imagined!"
