Eagle's Trace Residents Benefit from an Array of Outdoor Amenities

Janet Beck's move to Eagle's Trace, an Erickson Senior Living community in West Houston, Tex., was greatly influenced by her love of the outdoors.
"When I was growing up in New York, I was in Girl Scout camp for four weeks every summer for four years," Janet recalls. "We slept in tents and went canoeing and hiking. I just loved it."
So, it should come as no surprise that once Janet discovered all the outdoor amenities and activities at Eagle's Trace, she knew she had found the right retirement community for her.
"As soon as I saw the lake, I was sold!" she says.
Now, Janet and her neighbors are out and about strolling along the landscaped walkways, relaxing at the Lakeside Wellness Garden, playing bocce, and dining alfresco. The opportunity to enjoy the fresh air in a secure, serene environment is just one benefit of a move to Eagle's Trace.
Home sweet home
From her three years in Colombia with the Peace Corps to social work and practicing law, Janet has had a busy career and a full life. It was a desire to downsize and move closer to family that encouraged her to consider Eagle's Trace.
"After reading the brochures I received from Eagle's Trace, I came for a tour in June 2021," Janet recalls. "I also participated in the Live the Life program for a couple days and got a feel for the community."
Live the Life is an overnight experience in a furnished residence that allows Priority List members to utilize amenities, dine at on-campus restaurants, and chat with current residents.
Impressed with the community's maintenance-free residences and vibrant lifestyle, she decided to expedite her move.
"I moved in the first week in August," says Janet. "They made it so easy! They came to my house and measured everything I wanted to bring. So, when I moved in, my apartment was ready to live in that first day."
Staying active
But Janet says her move to Eagle's Trace was greatly influenced by the many outdoor amenities on the 70-acre campus. Now, her daily routine includes walking around campus to enjoy the lake, gardens, and other natural features.
"I've been a walker for a million years," says Janet, with a laugh. "Eagle's Trace is designed with these attractive, scenic walkways that are great for people's physical health, because it makes you want to walk. It's also nice to meet people as you walk the campus."
She adds, "I try to walk around three miles a day. That's my goal."
Janet also heads the Wanderers, a resident group that gathers early on Saturday mornings for walks at nearby parks. Occasionally, they'll picnic at the park or return to campus for a bite to eat at the Waterloo Cafe.
The group also takes nature photos that are then shared on Channel 896, the community's in-house TV station.
"It's a nice group of people," Janet says. "We always have fun!"
Amenities galore
Eagle's Trace boasts an array of other impressive outdoor amenities as well, including alfresco dining at the Waterloo Cafe and Stetsons restaurant, the Happy Tails dog park, shuffleboard, pickleball and bocce courts, and more!
"Eagle's Trace is nestled on 70 acres of beautiful scenery, including our Lake Aquila," says Resident Life Director Kristen Kennedy. "The Resident Life team finds every opportunity to host lakeside happy hours for residents, complete with a live performer, wine, and appetizers. This brings members of the community outside to enjoy the breeze and each other's company."
Socializing outdoors with neighbors, family, and friends fosters connections that enhance residents' well-being. This contrasts with the isolation that many older adults encounter when living alone in their houses.
"Every time I take a walk around Eagle's Trace, I see and meet new people," Janet says. "That's why I really love it here; I was feeling isolated living in my 2,000-square-foot house."
‘Love living here'
Although Janet loves her routine, she's excited to take advantage of the season's beautiful weather and try new activities on campus.
"My next goal is joining the bocce team!" she says. "I love living here, enjoying the outdoors, and meeting new friends."
She adds, "And if you need something, residents and staff are super supportive here. Great people--I guess that's an Erickson ethic."
